This Week in AI

1. Google declared the "agentic Gemini era" at I/O 2026 Google's annual developer conference was wall-to-wall AI. The headline announcements: Gemini Omni, a new model that can create from any input including video, and Google Antigravity, an agent-first development platform that lets anyone build and deploy AI agents without infrastructure setup. Sundar Pichai described it as the moment AI stops answering questions and starts completing tasks. Whether the products match the rhetoric is a separate question.

2. Anthropic is about to become worth nearly a trillion dollars Bloomberg and TechCrunch both reported this week that Anthropic is in talks to raise between $30 and $50 billion at a valuation of $900 billion, which would put it above OpenAI's $852 billion valuation. The round is expected to close before the end of May. Anthropic was valued at $380 billion in February. That is three times its own valuation in roughly three months. Something is happening in this industry.

3. ChatGPT now runs ads and the formats are getting more aggressive OpenAI launched a self-serve Ads Manager earlier this month and this week began testing new formats with larger images, custom call-to-action buttons, and dedicated e-commerce units. Financial services brands including Robinhood are already running in the pilot. OpenAI is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year. ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers stay ad-free. Everyone else is the product now.

4. ChatGPT can now read your bank account OpenAI launched a personal finance feature in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the US, using Plaid to connect bank accounts directly. You can ask ChatGPT to analyse your spending, flag patterns, and help with financial planning against your actual numbers. It is the most personal data OpenAI has touched yet, and the privacy questions are not fully answered.

5. Anthropic and the Gates Foundation committed $200 million to global health and education A four-year partnership to develop AI tools for healthcare, education, agriculture, and economic development in underserved regions. The health component includes working with health ministries on outbreak detection and vaccine development. It is the largest philanthropic AI commitment of the year and one of the few times a frontier AI company has pointed its technology at problems that do not generate revenue.

6. OpenAI brought Codex to your phone Codex, OpenAI's autonomous coding agent, is now available on the ChatGPT mobile app. Developers can monitor active AI coding workflows, approve commands, and supervise agents from their phone while away from their desk. It is the clearest sign yet that AI coding is moving from a desktop tool to persistent background infrastructure.

7. Anthropic and PwC announced the largest enterprise Claude deployment to date PwC is training 30,000 US staff on Claude Code and Claude Cowork, with a joint Center of Excellence and live deployments already running across insurance underwriting, cybersecurity, and HR. In one case, underwriting cycles dropped from ten weeks to ten days. This is the kind of before-and-after number that makes other enterprises start paying attention.

8. Goldman Sachs adopted Claude for accounting and compliance Goldman Sachs is implementing Claude to automate accounting and compliance work, putting one of the most scrutinised financial institutions in the world on record as trusting an AI model with high-stakes regulated operations. This will either become a case study or a cautionary tale. We will be watching.

9. Telegram is turning AI into your inbox manager Telegram introduced assistant bots capable of reading, filtering, and replying to messages based on user-defined permissions. The framing is that messaging platforms are becoming a battleground for persistent AI agents, not just chatbots. If this works as described, it changes the inbox from something you manage to something that manages itself.

10. Meta and LinkedIn are cutting jobs and redirecting to AI Both companies announced layoffs this week while simultaneously increasing AI investment. This is the pattern across major tech: fewer people, more compute, same or higher output expectations. The jobs are not disappearing into nothing. They are being replaced by something that does not ask for equity or healthcare.

  1. Google's Universal Cart is quietly one of the biggest commerce announcements of the year Announced at I/O, Universal Cart is an intelligent shopping cart that works across merchants. You can add items from different stores and check out through one interface with AI handling product comparison, price tracking, and recommendations. If it ships as described, it competes directly with the way most e-commerce operates today.

  2. OpenAI's Codex is now available for on-premises enterprise deployment OpenAI announced a partnership with Dell Technologies this week to bring Codex to hybrid and on-premises environments. Enterprises that cannot move sensitive code to the cloud now have an official path to autonomous AI coding inside their own infrastructure. This removes one of the last remaining reasons large enterprises were sitting out the AI coding wave.

  3. SynthID and Content Credentials are expanding across Google products Google announced it is extending AI content watermarking across more products, making it easier to verify whether media was AI-generated. Millions of people are already using the SynthID detector in the Gemini app. As AI-generated video, images, and audio become indistinguishable from the real thing, this infrastructure is going to matter more than most people currently realise.
