And developers who thought they were paying $29 a month for a coding tool woke up to bills heading north of $750.

Nobody is slowing down. Nobody is stopping to explain what any of this means. The announcements keep coming, the numbers keep climbing, and the coverage mostly just reports the figures without asking the uncomfortable questions underneath them.

The week AI stopped pretending the economics were simple

Start with GitHub Copilot. On June 1, Microsoft switched its billing system from a flat monthly subscription to a token-based model. The reaction was immediate and not quiet. On Reddit and X, developers started sharing screenshots of projected bills. One user going from $29 to $750 a month. Another from $50 to something close to $3,000. The phrase circulating most frequently was "what a joke."

Here is the thing: the anger is understandable but the surprise should not be. The flat-fee model was always hiding something. When a developer runs a long agentic session using a frontier model, the actual compute cost of that session can be ten to twenty times what they were paying. Microsoft was subsidising the gap. That subsidy is now over.

What changed is not Microsoft's greed. What changed is the product. GitHub Copilot used to be a code completion tool. Now it is an agentic system that can run for hours, consume massive amounts of context, and call expensive models repeatedly. Selling that at $29 a month was never going to be a permanent arrangement. The developers being priced out are the ones using it most aggressively, which is exactly the usage pattern the flat fee made look free.

The broader implication is one the whole AI industry should sit with. The "unlimited access for a low monthly fee" pitch has been the on-ramp that got millions of people using AI tools seriously. That pitch is running out of road. As models get more powerful and agentic workflows get more compute-hungry, the economics of flat pricing break down. Every major AI product is going to face this reckoning eventually. Copilot just went first.

Meanwhile, Anthropic became the most valuable private AI company in the world. The $65 billion Series H at a $965 billion valuation pushed it past OpenAI's $852 billion for the first time, and the company then filed a confidential S-1 with the SEC, setting up what could be the largest pure-play AI IPO in history. The revenue numbers behind the filing are striking: $10.9 billion projected for Q2 2026, more than the company generated in all of 2025.

But the operating margin sits at roughly 5 percent on that revenue. For a company approaching a trillion-dollar valuation, that is a thin number. The cost of running frontier models at scale is not a temporary problem waiting to be engineered away. It is the central tension of this entire industry: the products people want most are also the most expensive to operate. Anthropic is not alone in this. It is just the most visible example right now.

Then there is Microsoft itself, announcing at Build 2026 that it has built its own reasoning model — MAI Thinking-1 — that matches the performance of Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6. This matters more than the benchmark. Microsoft has spent years and billions of dollars as OpenAI's primary backer. Building a competing model in-house is not a side project. It is a signal about where Microsoft thinks it needs to be independent. Every major tech company is doing some version of this calculation right now. The age of pure dependency on a single AI partner is ending.

These three stories are not separate. They are the same story told from different angles. The AI industry built on generous subsidies, flat fees, and investor-funded patience is starting to reveal what the underlying economics actually look like.

Anthropic's revenue is doubling quarter over quarter — and compute costs are the constraint

Anthropic's Q2 2026 revenue projection of $10.9 billion is more than double Q1's $4.8 billion. The growth is real and driven heavily by enterprise coding use. Announced at Build with less fanfare than the agent features, Microsoft and Mayo Clinic are building frontier healthcare AI together, combining Microsoft's reasoning models with Mayo's clinical data and expertise. This is AI entering one of the most regulated and consequential industries on earth. It got a fraction of the coverage that the Copilot pricing story did.

THE VERDICT
The Copilot pricing backlash is real — but the developers most upset are the ones the new model was always going to find

The people facing $750 bills are heavy agentic users running frontier models for hours at a stretch. That usage pattern was never going to stay at $29 a month. The anger is understandable. The expectation behind it was not reasonable.

What is actually worth being concerned about is what this means for the developers who were using Copilot at a normal clip and now face unpredictable monthly costs. That group has a legitimate complaint. Predictability matters. When you cannot tell at the start of a project what your tooling will cost by the end of it, you make different decisions. Some of those decisions will be to use less AI, not more.

Microsoft's bet is that the value delivered is worth the new price. That may be true for enterprise teams with budget flexibility. For individual developers and small teams building on tight margins, the calculation is different. The alternatives — Claude Code, Windsurf — are watching this very carefully. If they hold their flat-fee pricing for a few more months, they will inherit a meaningful share of the developers Copilot just priced out.

This is what real competition in the AI tools market looks like. Not benchmarks. Pricing decisions.
